MAYER ENGLISH OCTAGON B/W TRANSFERWARE SOFT PASTE SERVING PLATTER. OF VENETIAN SCENE, W/WATER FOUNTAINS, PALATIAL BUILDINGS, TERRACES, LUSH. 18" Width x 14" Depth x 1 ¾ Height.
This early English Staffordshire soft paste transferware ceramic serving platter, is octagon shaped and has a wonderful, clean interior basin, free of scratches, abrasions or cutlery marks. The edges are also pristine. This was clearly a seldom, if at all used piece of decorative Staffordshire, that most likely was almost surely used for decorative purposes. It has a period maker's stamp on the verso and there is some slight blue discoloration on the underside of the platter (the reason I can not say it's near mint condition) most likely from being stored on top of other Flow Blue period pieces of china, where moisture over the years allowed the blue ink to leach into the bottom of the soft paste ceramic base plate of the platter. This is it though, as far as any'damage' is concerned. The show side of the platter is incredibly clean and as they say,'as clean as a whistle. It would be difficult to ask for a mid-19th century Staffordshire platter to come in much better condition than this absolute beauty. It's big, it's heavy, it's thick and it's beautiful. Just waiting to be put on display in your home on a fireplace mantle, sideboard or in an early cupboard.
This would'pop' against your painted early furniture and primitives. Gorgeous and being offered without apologies. Please scroll down to view enlarged photos below.
